We are very excited to annouce the release of Rosabrook’s first ever Tempranillo!
Over 15 years ago Rosabrook patriarch Mike Calneggia along with winemaker Brian Fletcher and viticulturist Murray Edmonds identified a particular piece of vineyard land that they were sure would be perfect for the renowned Spanish grape variety Tempranillo (pronounced Temp-ra-ne-o) which is the mainstay of Rioja (pronounced Ri-o-ca) in northern Spain.
The first few vintages were hard work and it took Murray a couple of years to get his head around this very labor intensive varietal, which requires a high level of canopy management and extensive crop thinning. The fruit from these early vintages was sold to other producers such as Hay Shed Hill, Devil’s Lair and Evans and Tate.
Fast forward to the 2010 vintage where a special wine was crafted in conjunction with Wine Selector’s Christian Gaffey for Frank Camorra’s Movida restaurant group in Melbourne. This was an exceptional wine and raised a few eyebrows on the wine list at $80 a bottle making it Australia’s most expensive version of the varietal.
Tempranillo is a fantastic varietal that is really starting to grab some attention on the Australian wine scene. Here is what Winemaker Brian Fletcher has to say about the noble grape variety:
“I like the alternative that is Tempranillo. It offers a savoury black cherry, sweet / sour edge that no other variety can match and there’s even a dash of Potpourri! Its usually a medium bodied wine, with nice bright fruit and that lingers throughout the palate and often with some nice fresh acidity. We’re not restricted by winemaking law in Australia as to how we make them and that tends to see lots of diversity both in region and style. In the warmer parts of Margaret River its doing very well for us and so far so good.”
For the 2012 vintage, Rosabrook decided to make the first ever Rosabrook Single Vineyard Estate Tempranillo. This is the fourth wine to be included in the Rosabrook Single Vineyard Estate Collection. The other wines in the collection include a Cabernet (95 points James Halliday, pouring Qantas Business Class), Chardonnay (95 points James Halliday, pouring Qantas First Class) and Shiraz (pouring Qantas Business Class).
There have only been 340 x 6 bottle cases produced of the 2012 Rosabrook Single Vineyard Estate Tempranillo and we are expecting this wine to fly out the door. It has been patiently waiting for 6 months to be released, much to the angst of Mike who has wanted to get selling as soon as it was bottled because he is so excited about this wine’s release. It has been a wrestle with Brian who was keen to see the wine have at least 6 months bottle age, Brian won!
Brian’s tasting note on this wine is as follows:
Deep purple in colour this wine is lifted and spicy with sufficient power to carry the American oak. Aromas of vanilla, sweet spice, chocolate and dark cherry. The palate does not hold back, deep, spicy potpourri, juicy flavoursome middle palate and abundant tannins will see many years reward.
