THE ROSABROOK WINES STORY
The Rosa Brook was originally home to a small number of group settlement farmers who pioneered the dairy industry in Margaret River in the 1930’s. Many of the isolated clearings they struggled to tame are now home to some of the region’s prime vineyards. Rosabrook Wines was one of the first wine producing pioneers of the Margaret River wine region. Owned by Calneggia Family Vineyards, the winemaking philosophy, carefully guided by the Calneggia family and winemaker Brian Fletcher, is to create elegant, fruit driven wines that are attractive whilst young but also will reward patient cellaring when the variety suits further ageing.
Rosabrook Wines long serving winemaker is the highly talented Brian Fletcher. Brian studied oenology at Charles Sturt University and began his career in winemaking in 1978 in Australia. Brian is an extremely versatile winemaker with a multitude of awards to his name. He is one of Margaret River’s most acclaimed wine makers with over thirty years of experience making wine all over the world. He has held a number of prestigious winemaking positions including Production Director for Casa Vinicola Calatrasi in Sicily and Chief winemaker for Evans & Tate. Although he is a household name in Margaret River and a veteran winemaker for the region, he is somewhat of a quiet achiever and prefers to stay out of the limelight and in the vineyard with his beloved vines.
The Rosabrook Wines vineyards are located in both the north and south of the Margaret River wine region. Orientated to the north and north-east provides shelter from the prevailing and sometimes destructive south west winds that are the prevailing winds of the region. The spiritual home of Rosabrook Wines is the Rosabrook Estate vineyard located in the hamlet of Rosa Brook some 14 kilometres from the Margaret River Township. The soils are the much favoured Forest Grove soils that consist of sandy topsoil with a high gravel content overlying clay subsoil. These soils are very free draining and can hold a reasonable amount of moisture which provides for balanced and even ripening. The vines are over 25 years old and produce intensely flavoured fruit.
